Manor complex in Ożarów

The revitalized manor complex consists of a wooden manor from 1757 with a Polish roof (a type of a hipped gambrel roof) and two corner annexes, a park with veteran trees and ponds, a gazebo and a donjon serving as a viewing point. The complex is a branch of the Museum of the Wieluń Region in Wieluń.

Description

The manor house was constructed in the late Baroque style. It is a wooden log house set on a stone and brick foundation. There are basements with barrel vaulting in the south-west part of the building. The house was based on a rectangular design resembling a square with four adjoined corner annexes not protruding over the side elevations. It is a double section building, with an entrance hall in the middle. On both sides of the hall, there are bottle-shaped chimneys. The house has a Polish roof (a type of a hipped gambrel roof) covered with shingle.

History

The present building of the manor house in Ożarów was constructed on the place of the previous house. It was built by Władysław Bartochowski, the royal treasurer and the master of the hunt of Sieradz and finally the castellan of Wieluń. His son, Wojciech, extended the family lands by incorporating the estates of Toplin and Skomlin. The Ożarów estate remained in the Bartochowski family’s hands and later in the hands of the related Bąkowski family until 1881, when it was purchased by Wiktor Maręż. One year later it became the property of the German Meske family, which stayed there until 1945.

After 1945, the manor house, the park and the surrounding forest were administrated by the Łódź department of the State Forest National Holding. From 1970 to 1980 it was thoroughly renovated. Since 1981 the building holds the Museum of Manor Interiors in Ożarów, the branch of the Museum of the Wieluń Region. In 1996, thanks to the Minister of Environment, Natural Resources and Forestry’s decision, the manor park was given for use to the museum.

Curious details

Inside the manor house, on the tie beam of a living room, there is engraved the date of the construction, 1757. There are also noticeable the letters “L. R.” – the first one corresponding to the name Władysław (Latin Ladislaus) and the second one – to the name of the Bartochowski family’s coat of arms – “Rola.”

Object location

The manor house is situated in the centre of the village, surrounded with a park complex. On the back of the building there are several ponds. The whole area is encircled with a brick fence. The manor and the park complex is located near the local road Wierzbie – Mokrsko, near the intersection with the local dirt road to Kocilew. Near the intersection, there is a large wooden sign post (a constructive element of a windmill) showing the direction to the manor and the windmill in Kocilew.

The easiest way to get to Ożarów is by the main road 45 (Racibórz – Opole – Kluczbork – Wieluń – Złoczew – Poznań/Łódź). In Wierzbie (around 10 km to the south of Wieluń) you need to turn into the road which leads directly to Ożarów (around 2 km). From the first crossroads in Ożarów, there is visible a lime alley leading to the museum and a large wooden signpost showing the way to the manor house and the windmill in Kocilew. There is a parking there.

In the centre of Ożarów, near the building of the Volunteer Fire Brigade, around 400 m from the manor house, there is a bus stop from where buses depart to Wieluń (12 buses daily), Praszka (6), Komorniki (2), Wierzbie (2).
