Zespół klasztorny misjonarzy w Łowiczu ob. muzeum

A former Seminar building from the 17th century; first it was a Missionary Seminar; its alumni include Józef Chełmoński - a painter and Stefan Starzyński - the president of Warsaw. Nowadays it is a museum with a rich collection.

Description

This former Seminar building was built in baroque style. It was founded by Primate Michał Radziejowski. Original painted decorations from 1695 can be viewed only in the St. Charles' Chapel. Nowadays, the rich interior is used for the organisation of concerts and other official ceremonies. In the garden there is an open-air museum with crafts and Łowicz cottages from the 18th and 19th century.

History

The building was designed in the 17th century by the Dutch architect Tylman from Gameren. It was destroyed during the both world wars. In 1945, after the explosion of time bombs,only the chapel's walls were left. In 1952 the former Seminar building was reconstructed and since then the Łowicz Museum, which is the branch of the National Museum in Warsaw, has been located there.

Object location

The building is located in the Old Market (Stary Rynek) and is clearly visible. There is a car park in the front of the museum.
