The ruins of the Ogrodzieniec Castle in Podzamcze - Station 09 – The Chapel
Description
First, we invite you to look at the chapel (photo 07.09.001). It is located in the centre of the village. The street leading down from the castle is called Zamkowa street (castle street) – that is just where this structure is located. Chapel and Ogrodzieniec Castle are combined in a strong relationship. Originally, the former was located on the Baszta Bramna (Gatehouse Tower), but, with the collapse of the building, also a chapel was destroyed. Hence, in the 19th century it was moved and rebuilt. For the reconstruction even the stones from the demolished castle were used.
The construction is covered with a metal roof with a turret. The interior is vaulted, and the keystone locking the rib of the vaults also comes from Ogrodzieniec. From the chapel of the castle to this one were moved Gothic sculptures of angels and the Blessed Virgin. On the front hanging picture shows the image of Our Lady with Jesus. However, the history of this picture is not known (photo 07.09.002).
In the chapel there is also a quite not sacred oddity: an iron cannonball from the 18th century. It fell inside during the siege. According to the informations, it did not do any damage.
Another place worth visiting in Podzamcze is the sanctuary of Our Lady of Skałka. It is located on Route 790, in direction of Pilica.
