The ruins of the Ogrodzieniec Castle in Podzamcze - Station 11 - Suchy Połeć

Description

Suchy Połeć is a rock located about 700 m from Ogrodzieniec Castle (photo 07.11.001). This is a classic monadnock, of which Jura has many. We encourage you to climb up its peak, in order to admire the panorama with all the attractions of the village. A bridge leads to this viewpoint. The safety of tourists is secured by rails (photo 07.11.002).

The biggest attraction of this side you encounter coming back from the rock. About 50 meters behind it there is a bunker from World War II.

The bunker is preserved in quite good condition. Military enthusiasts will recognize many of its elements: windows and shooting positions, the remnants of the armoured doors and ventilation systems (photo 07.11.003-07.11.010). It was built in 1944. The German Army High Command led the retreat from the eastern front. At that time were created a number of defensive lines, meant to delay the march of the Red Army. Jura was perfectly suitable for defence, because of its upland character. The line passing through these areas had the strengthening of wood, earth and in the form of concrete shelters. All were connected by a system of trenches. Around the shelter in Suchy Połeć there were also shooting position and anti-tank ditches. Local residents were forced to work on their construction. However, the prepared strengthening have not been used since the retreating Germans had nobody to fill them with. The Russians did not even realise they were crossing a defence line. Today these structures are a big tourist attraction.

We invite you to continue your tour to see also the reconstruction of the castle on Mount Birów. To get there, you must follow the signpost toward north. The distance separating you from the castle will be covered in about 10 minutes.
