Using the Monitoring application

The "Monitoring" application has three basic functions:

  • Checking the position of other members of the group - thanks to this function one participant of the trip can check the position of any of his or her friends using the map in the mobile phone. The function can be found in the tab "Group" and then "Options" and "Ask about the positions."
  • monitoring a given person by other members of the group and the Data Centre - the application sends automatic return messages with its position to other members of the group, who have sent a message asking about the position of a given user, providing that they are on the list of "friends."
The application also allows for sending periodic messages with the position to another user or to the Data Centre. After activating that function, the user's position during the trip is constantly monitored by the Data Centre. The function can be activated in the tab "Settings" - "Send position every..."
  • sending the SOS signal with information about the user's geographical location to the Data Centre - this function can be found in every screen under the "Call Help" menu item.

How to use the "Monitoring" application?

The "Monitoring" application consists of three main screens, that is:

  • the "Group" screen,
  • the "Events" screen,
  • and the "Map" screen.

You can switch between the screens using "left" and "right" buttons or the joystick.

The "Group" screen

The screen shows the list of friend from the mobile phone list of contacts. People from the list can send messages asking for the user's position and the application will send a return message with the position. In case when such a message is sent by a person who is not on the list, the application will not send the return message, that is, the asking message will be ignored.

In the "Group" screen there are following options:

  • Adding contacts to the contact list - to add a new friend to the list, enter "Options" - "Add the contact" and then find that person in your phone book.
  • Removing contacts from the contact list - to remove a given contact from the contact list enter "Options" - "Remove the contact."
  • Asking for the position - to ask a friend about his or her position enter "Options" - "Ask about the position." The application will send an automatic text message asking about the position of the chosen person.
  • Showing a friend's position on the map - to show the last known position of your friend on the map enter "Options" - "Show on the map." After receiving the message with the user's position, it will be marked on the map.

The "Events" screen

The "Events" screen shows information concerning sent/received text messages, for example messages with one's own position sent to other people or similar messages received from them.

The "Map" screen

The "Map" screen shows the map on which there is marked the last known position of a given friend. To see the map, you need the access to the Internet. The map can be zoomed in and out after entering the menu and then "Options" - "Zoom in" or "Options" - "Zoom out."

The are two other menu items showed in every screen:

  • "Settings"
  • "Call help." After choosing that option the application will send a text message with the user's geographic location to the Data Centre.

"Settings" screen

The application can be configured in the "Settings":

  • SOS number - the telephone number of the Data Centre where the SOS message will be sent to.
  • Communication with the Data Centre - to choose one of two forms of communication with the Data Centre: via text messages or by transferring packets of data, that is, by GPRS.
  • The Data Centre Number - the telephone number which will be used to communicate with the Data Centre via text messages.
  • The Data Centre IP Address - the IP addresses which will be used to communicate with the Data Centre during the transfer of the data packages via GPRS. The first address is the main address of the Data Centre and the rest of them are additional addresses.
  • Show positions - this function allows for choosing one of two options:
    • to all - after choosing this option the application "responds" to messages from users who are not on the list of friends in the "Group" screen
    • to friends - after choosing this option the application "responds" only to messages from users who are on the list of friend in the "Group" screen
  • Send the position every... - this option defines the period of time (minutes/seconds) after which the application sends new message with the user's position to the Data Centre. After choosing that option the position of the user will be monitored by the Data Centre.
  • Send the position every... - this option defines the travelled distance (in metres) after which the application sends new message with the user's position to the Data Centre. For example, after setting 500 m as the distance, the application sends a message with the user's position to the Data Centre every time the user travels 500 m.
