Jasna Gora in Czestochowa - Station 06 - Tower
Description
The entrance to the tower is located in the passage between the main courtyard and the courtyard in front of the Chapel of the Miraculous Icon (photo 01.06.001). In this passage, above one of the entrance, there is a sculpture of the Madonna and the Child, standing on a crescent (photo 01.06.002). The tower of Jasna Gora (fot.01.06.003), dominating the monastery as well as the entire Czestochowa, became a symbol of the whole sanctuary. The tower serves as the bell tower, because in its interior there is a carillon of 36 bells, which every quarter play Marian songs. The current tower is already the fifth building of this type on the hill. Its foundation dates from 1714, and the upper floors date only from the early 20th century. The whole structure was made in Baroque style. From the base to the finial it is 106.3 metres, being the third highest church tower in the country. Noteworthy, the bell tower is inclined from the vertical by 78 cm.
If you look at the tower of Jasna Góra, you will see how the clock is driven by a mechanism of three counterweights (photo 01.06.004). The clock has 36 bells, playing different kinds of tunes. Above the clock there is an arcaded vantage point (photo 01.06.005). Above, on the corners of the gallery, there are the statues of St. Paul the First Hermit (photo 01.06.006), St. Florian, St. Casimir (photo 01.06.007) and St. Queen Jadwiga. In the fifth floor there are the statues of the doctors of the church: St. Leo the Great, St. Gregory of Nazianzus, St, Augustine and St. Ambrose (photo 01.06.008). The summit of the tower is decorated with a cross lighten at night, at the foot of which there is a metal flag with the initials of the Blessed Virgin Mary and the image of a raven with a loaf of bread in its beak (photo 01.06.009). We encourage you to reach the viewing terrace, by ascending the 516 steps. From the top there is a beautiful view of Czestochowa, in good weather you can even see the castle ruins in Olsztyn.
After descending the tower we invite you to the interior of the Basilica.
