Jasna Gora in Czestochowa - Station 11 - St. Barbara Bastion

Description

St. Barbara Bastion, or Lubomirski, as the entire monastic fortress, was built in the 17th century. The construction was financed by the Lubomirski family, and hence its second name. Inside the bastion there is the Kaplica Golgoty Wschody (Chapel of Golgotha of the East) dedicated to Poles who died beyond the eastern borders of our country.

When standing by the rails of the bulwark, you can see the park surrounding Jasna Gora monastery on three sides. The park is located on the place of the former moat, which used to defend the monastery against the attacks. In 1913, the new Stations of the Cross were blessed (photo 01.11.001-01.11.014). The fourteen Stations of the Cross were designed by Stefan Schyller. Each station is a group of sculptures made by the prominent sculptor Pius Weloński. The sculptures stand on a high stone pedestal, so that the way of the cross can be done just by walking on Jasna Góra bulwarks. The realistic figures, with the tree of the monastery park in the background, strengthen the perception of the historical events and encourage the pilgrims to reflect and pray. On St. Barbara bastion in 2012 was placed a well-sculpture erected to commemorate the Polish-Hungarian friendship (photo 01.11.015). On the well is depicted the Blessed Eusebius Ostrzychomski, the founder of the Pauline Order.

Please, move along the walls of Jasna Gora toward the next bastion.
